Guerrero retains Precinct 4 constable position

McLennan County Precinct 4 Constable Charlie Guerrero will retain his position. Guerrero edged out challenger Matt Cawthon in a tight GOP primary race on March 1.

Guerrero won 3,049 votes - or 51.1 percent of the total in the race, while Cawthon brought in 2,803, or 47.9 percent. A late influx of votes for Guerrero helped swing the election in his favor.

Guerrero was appointed by the McLennan County Commissioners Court to the position July 27 after former Constable Stan Hickey resigned.

Several Republican leaders have said a recount could be possible.

A story that appeared in the McGregor Mirror on March 10 saying the two would need a run-off election was incorrect. A run-off would have only been needed if three candidates had been seeking the position, making it necessary for one of them to receive 50 percent of the vote to win.

Cawthon's wife, Shelly, said they would abide by whatever the final count was.

"No one wants to run in an election and lose," she said. "We're disappointed but that's the way it goes sometimes."
